Liberation in Kate Chopins The Awakening and Zora Neale Hurstons Their Eyes Were Watching God With few exceptions, our male dominated society has traditionally feared, repressed, and stymied the growth of women. As exemplified in history, man has always enjoyed a superior position. According to Genesis in the Old Testament, the fact that man was created first has led to the perception that man should rule. However, since woman was created from man’s rib, there is a strong argument that woman was meant to work along side with man as an equal partner. As James Weldon Johnson’s poem, â€Å"Behold de Rib,† clearly illustrates, if God had intended for woman to be dominated, then she would have been created from a bone in the foot, but â€Å"he†¦show more content†¦Edna weds Leonce Pontellier, a Creole, to retaliate against her father and sister. In defiance, Edna marries, not for love, but to punish her family for their disapproval. Edna’s first marriage is her initial attempt towards self-determination. Janie, on the other hand, in her initial attempt towards self-determination, rejects the idea of marriage, but is forced into a loveless union to Logan Killicks because of her grandmother’s persistence. Janie had always believed in marrying for love, not security—a virtue her grandmother adamantly preached. Ironically, these oppressive marriages make these women stronger. Initially, these women are looked upon as possessions, and, thus, their identities are degraded. Leonce treats Edna as a belonging and looks upon her â€Å"as one looks at a valuable piece of personal property which has suffered some damage† (Chopin 7). Janie is regarded in the same way by Logan, who â€Å"refuses to accept essential parts of her heritage, personality, and experience† (Kubitschek 23). Because their husbands limit their avenues of opportunity to pursue any individual growth, they become more determined to rebel against the status quo. Edna and Janie are expected to play the roles of a typical woman of their times: keeping home, cooking meals, and raising a family. The concept that either woman could be capable of supporting herself was alien to this period. M21 Essay: Diagnosis of an Infected Patient Essay As we know bacteria comes in various classes and are distinguished by their shapes, chemical configuration, source of energy either sunlight or chemicals, nutritional requisites and biochemical actions. We have a patient that may be infected with an unknown bacterial infection; we’ve collected a sputum sample and will be testing for one of the following genera: Bacillus, Escherichia and Mycoplasma. In order to determine which one of the three may be the source of the infection we have to recognize the characteristics of each one and the staining protocol needed to identify them. All three of the above mentioned genera are considered to be members of the Prokaryotic cell family†¦show more content†¦Let’s begin with Mycoplasma because this genera has a very thin or lacks a cell wall we will consider this a â€Å"Gram- positive† bacteria. If mycoplasma retains its structure, size and capsules that’s an indication of the type of bacteria causing the infection in the patient. Bacillus are part of the prokaryotic cell family containing a thin layer of peptidoglycan; however they are spore forming; this trait helps to identify them as â€Å"gram-positive†. Step (1) in the staining process is adding the sputum to the slide, step (2) is applying heat to the sample, step (3) adding crystal-violet dye which turns the cytoplasm cells purple and applying mordant to the specimen, step (4) wash with de-coloring solution (alcohol) which causes the peptidoglycan to become more impermeable crystal –violet and iodine, step (5) counterstain is absorbed and is masked by the primary purple dye that was previously absorbed by the â€Å"gram-positive† cells (pg. 86). It’s during this step when the microbes are identified. While the bacillus is in the aging process some cells die and give the appearance of gram-negative bacteria; these are known as â€Å"gram-variable† (Tortora, 2013). Buddhism And Zen Koan Essay The Zen Koan is a written or verbal puzzle used in the teaching of Buddhism tobring the student to the level of satori or enlightenment. According to D TSuzuki in An Introduction To Zen Buddhism, the word Koan now denotes someanecdote of an ancient master, or a dialogue between master and monks, or astatement or question put forward by a teacher, all of which are used as themeans for opening ones mind to the truth of Zen.(Suzuki 102). Koans areoften in the form of statements that seem, at first, to make little or no sense. This aspect of a Koan is intended to help the student concentrate on the wordsand pull meaning from them in the same way that they must pull meaning fromthemselves in order to achieve satori. Koans sometimes seem to beconstructed of two contradicting concepts, which may be true from the standpointof the dynamics of language. This joining of two opposing concepts is meant toshow the student that all concepts are actually a part of one another since theyexist in the same world. Koans are intended to join the opposing concepts withinthe student, which is the oneness of Zen Buddhism. Zen masters, by thismeans, would force the evolution of the Zen consciousness into the minds oftheir less endowed disciples.(Suzuki 102). The real self of Zen lies inthe harmony of opposites. To those who pay more attention to the actual writtenwords of the Koan, Koans will never make sense. Koans are deliberately meant todefy the logic that exists in the world outside the self, the world ofgovernment and so cial constructs. They are meant to help the student see theworld undistorted by these learned concepts. The language of a Koan also usessimple concepts and objects that are universal. Keeping the subject simple, thestudent does not have to worry themselves over the symbolism of the subject, butrather, what the entire composition of the Koan represents. The composition as awhole, once it is thought of in this way, should reveal something about thewholeness of the individual who has figured it out. An example of this dualityand simplicity is found in the following Koan: When your mind is not dwellingon the duality of good and evil, what is your original face before you wereborn?(Suzuki 104). The subjects of koans tend to be simple objects such astrees, animals or aspects of nature. Or simple words for concepts or emotions,such as love, hate, good and evil . This attention to simplicity helps thestudent to view the entire Koan, instead of being anchored to a complex,abstract concept. T he reasoning behind every Koan is the same, that the world isone interdependent whole and that each separate one of us is that Whole. In theabove Koan, there is simplicity in the choice of the words good and evilover any words that may represent these symbolically. In fact, the first part ofthe Koan may not even be the most important part, but only stated to make thestudent realize that they are concerned with the duality of the outside world. The conflicts of the outside world have been distracting the student fromrealizing the purity of their own face before you were born. The famousKoan that goes: What is the sound of one hand clapping? is interesting inthe sense that if one thinks of it in terms of the logic that they were taughtby the outside world, there is no such sound. Ordinarily, a sound is heardonly when two hands are clapping, and in that sense no sound can come from onehand alone. This Koan, however, is meant to strike at the root ofour everyday experience, which is constructed on so-called scientific or logicalbasis(Suzuki 105). The duality here lies in what we have been taught to belogical. The Koan threatens our knowledge of the way our world is supposed towork. The Koans, therefore, as we have seen, are generally such as to shutup all possible avenues to rationalization(Suzuki 108).
